Fat Liberation Resources

Each Fat Fridays Virtual Social Club (presented by NAAFA and hosted by me!) involves a themed discussion and game. The following information came from our September 2024 gathering with the theme of fat lib journeys. What you’ll find in this post is a collaborative effort from our group discussions.

How to Respond to Anti-Fat Bullshit

  • “I don’t want to talk about food” is a good response when you know someone isn’t a safe person to talk about food.

  • “No thanks” when people try to invite you into diet/weight loss talk—even if we have to say it multiple times.

Self-Care Strategy

  • Look in the mirror and point out what do *I* see and like, not what do other people see.

Online Resources

Media Recommendations

  • Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting by Kelsey Miller

  • Fat! So? by Marilyn Wann (zines that later became a book)

  • Your Body is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor

  • Your Fat Friend documentary with Aubrey Gordon (and her podcast)

  • You Have the Right to Remain Fat by Virgie Tovar

Rad Fat Folks to Follow

These names were used in our bingo game. They were gathered from previous blog posts from past Fat Fridays in which participants named these folks as fat icons across various themes. I thought they were still worth a mention because they’re obviously so awesome that they’ve been mentioned various times over the years!
